Lake Ouachita (Wash-i-taw)
|
Covering over 49,000 acres, Lake Ouachita is the
state's largest manmade lake and according to the EPA, one of the cleanest lakes
in the United States. The reservoir is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of
Engineers and the shoreline covers some 970 miles. Deer, black bear, wild
turkey and other wildlife roam the surrounding forest and the lake provides a
wintering home for many eagles.
You can enjoy the crystal clear waters by
swimming, scuba diving, water skiing, sailing, and fishing. Visitors may choose
from a variety of accommodations from luxury lake view condominiums to rustic
cabins or inexpensive motel offerings. See our
camping section.

Rockhounding
| The Ouachita Mountains have some of the
most unusual geological formations in the world are are a paradise for
Rockhounds. Quartz crystal can be found around almost any white
quartz outcropping. There is a lot more information about crystal on
the Crystal page. Both Novaculite and Stanley
Shale (Devonian and Mississippian Age) can be seen along Highway 8 and 27
East of Caddo Gap. Novaculite is popular for sharpening stones.
Another natural rock is Sandstone (Ordovican Age) found along Collier
Creek.
The Geo-Float Trail is a self-guided tour for boaters
that showcases many of Lake Ouachita's unique geological formations.
